Natural family photography posing ideas - goodbye stiff and awkward!
Photos from a candid family photoshoot in Nashville.
In this day and age, most of us have come to realize how much we don’t love the stiffly posed family photos of old. Not only that, but it can be incredibly difficult to get kids to both stay still and stay happy for more than just a few minutes. Family photos have historically been stressful, and something to just get through. Not any longer!
Below you will find some ideas and suggestions to create images that are authentic to you, and that you’ll enjoy coming back to over and over again through the years as you reminisce…
This was such a fun family photoshoot! I met Gracie and her boys at the park on a sunny, breezy evening. The littlest one was on his own adventure, and the three of us would just follow him around as he explored, occasionally wrangling him for a cuddle or a hug. We met so many cute doggies, dropped pretty little yellow flowers in the water fountain, and explored the park together. This is why I love family sessions - it’s not about posing perfectly and having everyone look at the camera in every shot… it’s about spending quality time together, and capturing authentic moments as they unfold.
All of theses photos were shot on 35mm film.
For cuddly family photos:
Grab a blanket and either lean in, or lay down together
Do a giant squish hug where everyone get’s as close as they possibly can
Pick up the littles and hold them for a bit
For up close family photos:
Hold hands, hold flowers or other special items
Go nose to nose or look into each other’s eyes
Plant kisses all over their face
Lean your face against theirs
For in the moment family photos:
Run around and play together
Have the kids hold hands
Let the kids roam and interact with each other
Ask your kids to do things (kisses, hugs, other special moments you like to share together)
Family photos on film has become one of my absolute favorite things!
So much of family photography is very in the moment, and it requires you to be present and pay attention… a perfect description of film photography! There’s also a timelessness to film photos. As the years go on, you won’t look at them and say “Oh my - that is SO late 2000’s!” etc.. These are photos that will last the test of time.
